Cabinet Painting Services
Providing professional cabinet painting services for homeowners who want to refresh the look of their kitchen, bathroom, or furniture.
Professional Cabinet Painting for Cabinets That Still Have Life Left in Them
Not every kitchen needs a full cabinet replacement. In many homes, the cabinet layout works well, the boxes are solid, and the storage is functional. The problem is the appearance. Older stain colors, worn finishes, orange-toned wood, dated doors, or mismatched updates can make the entire room feel tired.
Cabinet painting gives homeowners a way to keep the cabinetry they already have while creating a fresh, updated look. With the right prep work and application process, painted cabinets can dramatically change the feel of a kitchen or bathroom without the cost and disruption of tearing everything out.
Is Cabinet Painting Right for Your Cabinets?
When Cabinet Painting Makes Sense
Cabinet painting is a great option when your cabinets are in good structural condition but no longer match the style of your home. It can be especially effective when you like the current layout but want the room to feel brighter, cleaner, or more current.
Cabinet painting may be a good fit if:
- Your cabinet boxes are solid and functional
- Your cabinets feel outdated because of the color or wood tone
- You want a more modern look without replacing everything
- You are updating countertops, backsplash, flooring, or hardware
- You want to improve the look of your home before selling
- You want a custom color that fits your design style
If cabinets are heavily damaged, poorly built, separating, water-damaged, or no longer functional, replacement may be the better long-term option. During the estimate process, the Cabinets by MacFarland team can help determine whether painting is a good solution for your specific cabinets.
Cabinet Painting vs. Cabinet Replacement
Cabinet replacement can be the right choice when the layout, structure, or storage no longer works. However, many homeowners do not need to replace their cabinets to get the look they want. Cabinet painting is often the better option when the existing cabinets are still in good shape. It allows you to keep the current layout while changing the color, improving the finish, and creating a more updated appearance.

Cabinet Painting May Be the Better Fit If:
- You are happy with the current cabinet layout
- You want to avoid a larger renovation
- You want to update the look of the room without replacing everything
- You want to coordinate cabinets with new countertops or hardware
- You want a custom color instead of stock cabinet finishes

Cabinet Replacement May Be the Better Fit If:
- The cabinet boxes are failing
- The layout no longer works
- You need significantly different storage
- There is major damage or poor construction
- You are already planning a full kitchen remodel
Cabinet Surfaces We Commonly Paint
Cabinet painting can be used in several areas of the home, not just the main kitchen cabinets. The right approach depends on the material, condition, and current finish of the cabinetry.
Kitchen Cabinets
Kitchen cabinet painting is one of the most effective ways to update the look of a kitchen. Painted cabinets can make the space feel brighter, cleaner, and more customized.
Cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts
Doors and drawer fronts are a major part of the finished look. These pieces are removed, prepared, and painted carefully so the final appearance feels clean and consistent.
Cabinet Boxes and Frames
The cabinet boxes and face frames are prepared and painted on-site. Surrounding surfaces are protected before work begins.
Kitchen Islands
A kitchen island can be painted to match the rest of the cabinets or finished in a contrasting color. Accent island colors are a popular way to add depth and personality to a kitchen.
Bathroom Vanities
Bathroom vanity painting can refresh a powder room, primary bathroom, or guest bathroom without replacing the entire vanity.
Built-Ins and Storage Cabinets
Built-ins, mudroom cabinets, laundry room cabinets, shelving units, and storage cabinetry can often be painted to better match the rest of the home.
What Goes Into a Professional Cabinet Finish?
Cabinet Painting Is All About the Prep
The difference between a quick cabinet repaint and a professional cabinet painting project usually comes down to preparation. Cabinets are touched, opened, closed, cleaned, and used every day. That means the finish needs to be approached differently than a standard wall or trim painting project.
A professional cabinet painting project may include:
- Removing doors and drawer fronts
- Cleaning and degreasing surfaces
- Sanding or scuffing to promote adhesion
- Filling small gaps, holes, or surface imperfections where appropriate
- Priming with products suited for cabinet surfaces
- Applying a smooth painted finish
- Reinstalling doors and drawer fronts
- Completing touch-ups and final review
OUR CABINET PAINTING PROCESS
What to Expect From Start to Finish
Every project is slightly different, but most cabinet painting projects follow a detailed process designed to keep the work organized and the final result consistent.
Step 1: Cabinet Review and Estimate
We review your existing cabinets, discuss your goals, and determine whether cabinet painting is the right fit. This is also when we can talk through color direction, hardware changes, island colors, and other project details.
Step 2: Project Planning
Before work begins, we confirm the scope of the cabinet painting project. This includes what will be painted, what will be removed, what will stay in place, and whether any hardware, hinge, or finish updates are included.
Step 3: Door & Drawer Removal
Cabinet doors and drawer fronts are removed and organized so they can be prepared and painted properly. These pieces are taken to the shop for a more controlled painting process.
Our facility in Livonia has 12 dedicated cabinet spray booths. If you are curious, you are welcome to chome check them out!
Step 4: Cabinet Preparation
Cabinet boxes and frames are prepared inside the home. This includes cleaning, sanding, masking, and protecting surrounding areas
Step 5: Priming & Painting
The cabinet boxes are painted on-site, while the doors and drawer fronts are painted off-site. This combination allows for a clean, consistent finish across the full cabinet system.
Step 6: Reinstallation & Final Walkthrough
Once the painted pieces are ready, the doors and drawer fronts are reinstalled. Hardware and hinge updates can also be completed at this stage if they are part of the project.
The project is reviewed for touch-ups, alignment, and finish details before completion.
Choose the Cabinet Color That Fits Your Home
Cabinet painting gives you the flexibility to choose the exact color you want. Clients are not limited to a small set of standard cabinet colors.
Popular options include:
- White and off-white cabinets
- Warm neutral cabinets
- Greige or taupe cabinets
- Soft green cabinets
- Navy or deep blue cabinets
- Charcoal or black cabinets
- Two-tone kitchens
Cabinet color should be chosen with the full space in mind, including countertops, backsplash, flooring, wall color, lighting, appliances, and hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is cabinet painting a good idea?
How do I know if my cabinets can be painted?
The best way to know is to have the cabinets reviewed. In general, cabinets need to be stable, functional, and in good enough condition to hold a painted finish. Cabinets with major water damage, failing construction, or severe surface issues may not be the best candidates.
Can I choose any cabinet color?
Yes. Clients can choose any color they want for their cabinets. Color consultations are available upon request and are complimentary when completed in the Livonia showroom.
Are white cabinets still popular?
Yes. White and off-white cabinets remain popular because they make kitchens feel bright, clean, and timeless. However, many homeowners are also choosing warm neutrals, soft greens, navy, charcoal, black, and contrasting island colors.
Can you paint just my kitchen island?
Yes. In many cases, a kitchen island can be painted by itself to create an accent color or better coordinate with the rest of the kitchen.
Can bathroom vanities be painted?
Yes. Bathroom vanity painting is a common way to update a bathroom without replacing the vanity.
Will painted cabinets hold up?
A painted cabinet finish depends heavily on preparation, product selection, application, and proper use after the project is complete. Cabinets by MacFarland follows a cabinet-specific process designed to create a smooth, durable finish.
How long does cabinet painting take?
The timeline depends on the size and complexity of the project, the number of doors and drawers, the cabinet condition, and whether additional updates are included. During the consultation, the team can provide a more accurate project timeline.
Do you remove cabinet doors before painting?
Yes. Cabinet doors and drawer fronts are removed and painted off-site, while cabinet boxes and frames are prepared and painted on-site.
Can cabinet painting be coordinated with new countertops?
Yes. Cabinets by MacFarland works closely with countertop companies and can help homeowners think through timing, color selection, and project coordination.
What areas do you serve?
